A useful Tenor API alternative must satisfy your application’s actual contract: the reactions users search for, the formats your client can render, the permissions you need, and the request volume you generate. A list of popular GIF websites does not answer those questions.
Google’s Tenor notice gives June 30, 2026 as the external API sunset date. The migration decision is now about restoring a supported integration.
Three practical directions
GIPHY provides a developer API with search and additional discovery endpoints. Its API documentation describes beta keys limited to 100 API calls per hour and an application process for production access, including a pricing discussion for qualifying applications. Confirm the current agreement and platform requirements before planning a launch around it.
GIFs.so provides search, category browsing, single-GIF lookup, and usage inspection over REST and MCP. Its current catalog contains 5,537 GIFs across 56 categories. Access is free with a verified account and supported by sponsors. This is a focused option for reaction search; do not assume a Tenor-sized catalog, automatic localization, uploads, or equivalent content-rating controls. Start with the integration guide.
A library you control can work when your product only needs a small set of approved reactions. This gives you control over availability and metadata, but your team must handle media rights, hosting, accessibility, search, and removal requests. Scraping another provider’s collection is not a shortcut to a licensed library.
Run the same evaluation for each option
Collect 30 representative queries from your own product. Include ordinary emotions, misspellings, cultural references, and terms in every language you support. Review the first page manually for relevance and suitability.
Next, test an unavailable item, an empty search, an expired credential, and a rate-limit response. Confirm which media formats are actually returned and how attribution must appear in your picker. Treat production approval and commercial terms as release dependencies.
Keep the migration reversible
Put provider-specific parsing behind one adapter and retain a provider label with each saved item. Roll out gradually and monitor successful selections, empty results, and errors separately. A large result count is not evidence that users can find the right reaction.
